The National Youth Education Summit (YES) is a weeklong excursion into the heart of the nation's capital, and everything it stands for, specifically, freedom. This seven-day, all-expense-paid, educational opportunity provides a select group of high school sophmores and juniors with a hands-on learning experience through Washington, D.C. Students will gain an eye opening perspective on American history and government while observing the political process at work.

The 2009 program will take place from Monday, July 6 thru Sunday, July 12.

YES activities include:

  • Discussing the Constitution and Bill of Rights with scholars and experts
  • Meeting members of Congress and staff
  • Touring the U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, and other National landmarks
  • Public speaking activities
  • Taking part in teamed debates
  • Meeting NRA leadership
  • Guided Tour of the National Firearms Museum at NRA Headquarters

Admission into the program is based on its comprehensive application. Requirements for submissions include:

  • Completed YES application form
  • High school transcript
  • 3-page essay on the Second Amendment
  • 1-page personal statement
  • 3 letters of recommendation

"YES is a great way to meet people who share the same values as you while gaining a deep sense of respect for our government and the fight to protect the Second Amendment."
-- Matt Frost, Idaho

"The YES program is a wonderful opportunity to meet new people and experience the heart of America. It's much more exciting to actually see the Capitol, and be immersed in the democratic process-just reading about it in a textbook pales in comparison. Furthermore, you gain an appreciation for our freedoms, especially the Second Amendment, and see the importance of working to protect it."
-- Lisa Fong, Hawaii

"The day at Quantico Marine Base and the friendships I made while attending YES were my favorite parts of the program. I am going to join the military after college, so being around those great men and women who are protecting our country really helped me to solidify my goals."
-- Kameron Sandy, Florida

"DO IT! It will change your life."
-- Kyle Macfarlan, Arkansas

The National Rifle Association launched YES in an effort to encourage America's youth to become active and knowledgeable citizens. Funding for YES comes from local donations and funds raised at Friends of NRA events and through grants provided by The NRA Foundation.
